Charlie Edwards retained his WBC title at the weekend when use of a video replay led to a’no contest’, but could VAR be introduced to boxing?
The British flyweight was left distraught after a late onslaught out of Julio Cesar Martinez led to a third-round knockout, but WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman immediately overturned the outcome because a’no competition’, citing the governing body’s willingness to utilize’instant replay’ to address controversial events.
Following the widespread use of VAR in soccer, the British Boxing Board of Control verified they would be open to discussion about the prospect of introducing technology to help officials.
Asked if VAR may be released, Robert Smith, General Secretary of this BBBofC told Sky Sports:”I believe we are always looking to improve things. It had been.
“There a great deal of things you’ve got to consider, where you’re obtaining the views from . Who’s providing it?
“Don’t forget we’d 286 shows this past year. Are we going to select not the shows that are little and the shows? Do not feel that works, therefore we’ve got to look in it, but ultimately on Saturday it had been used.”
Sky Sports specialist Matthew Macklin and all the WBC’s decision to overthrow the result following the use of a playoff in The O2 had consented.
‘That is the perfect choice,” Macklin told Sky Sports. “He was obviously hurt, he’d get stuck down.
“He was stunned from a head shot, then he definitely got crippled having a body shot, like he confessed he said I took a knee, tried to get my breath back and after that he was on his own knee, that is when Martinez hit him with that huge body shot which totally took the wind from him. Absolutely the ideal decision to call a no contest.”
The BBBofC bring together board members to discuss issues that are current and Smith says VAR could develop into a talking point.
“We have meetings on a regular basis. We always discuss things to attempt to improve the sport,” he said.
“When it was decided we would use it, we’d bring it in as soon as we possibly can. Virtually potential, though it was determined, but as I say, it had been used on Saturday.”
