(CNN) — There is a special bond between German football club Union Berlin and its fans and the closeness of the relationship was honored in a poignant way across the weekend as the group made its Bundesliga introduction.
Ahead of Saturdays match against RB Leipzig, Union assistants held up placards of deceased family members together with the inscriptionEdlich dabei (Finally there).
The deceased were counted in the official attendance. The Stadion An der Alten F??rstereis official capacity will be listed as 22,402, but Saturdays attendance was listed as 22,467.
The stadium, which is the biggest purpose-built football ground in Berlin, has been officially opened in 1920, however, has experienced a series of structural modifications over the years, notably the refurbishment and roofing of the standing areas between June 2008 and July 2009.
According to the clubs website, Union fansbuilt their own arena, with over 2,300 volunteers providing 140,000 hours of labour time, helping the Berlin staff save countless dollars.

Saturdays tribute was organized by an assortment of fan groups, together with images of the fans raised before kick-off since the anthem of the club spelled out. The costs of the tickets were paid for by fans.
But, the introduction into the Bundesliga of Union proved a difficult one — that they were hammered 4-0 by Leipzig.
Season Union finished third in footballs second tier to earn a playoff from VfB Stuttgart.
Unions subsequent two-legged victory and promotion watched the team become the first from the former East Germany out of East Berlin and the fifth to gain passage.
